Artist's Statement:
Drawing inspiration from Post-Impressionist, Cubist, and Abstract Expressionist works, my paintings try to find a reconciliation between materiality, texture, celebration of flatness; and the illusory possibilities represented in the exploration of depth and space. Figures, masses, contours all suggest an alternative world – chaotic depictions of everyday objects and places – while the full embrace of paint brings the eye back to the surface. I like to think of my paintings as windows, welcoming the viewer into a three-dimensional space, and then watching them – like a bird – fly into flatness.
I am intrigued by what happens when chance meets intention, and I consistently try to expose that magic in my pieces. Depth vs. surface. Illusion vs. honesty. Representation vs. abstraction. Age vs. newness.
