Nature inspires my work beginning with a sketch painted out of doors. On daily walks in the wildlands where I live, I paint from life on my portable easel. The truth of a scene is more intimately observed and captured in this way. Trees, wildflowers, skies, birdsong, and radiant light, imbue my attempts joyfully.
Theses sketches are key to the veracity of my larger studio paintings. They contain valuable reference information borne of a human temperament which photographs cannot provide. Moreover they are souvenirs of halcyon days spent intimately in nature. They are not retouched but are allowed to stand on their initial merit. I have hundreds of them completed during my wanderings on four continents.
Endangered creatures and habitats are prominent subjects of my work with a strong message for their conservation.
